Woodward-Granger High School is a member of the Iowa High School Speech Association (IHSSA). We have both a freshman and a high school team. IHSSA is a group which encourages students to perform in a variety of ways. It challenges students to act, write, think on their feet, and have fun while acting like a professional. Last school year, we were very successful and had a lot of fun becoming successful. In the early part of 2016, 7 groups prepared to compete in the Large Group, District IHSSA (Iowa High School Speech Association) Competition. To do this, students found a script and memorized lines, or worked on creating story lines from random situations, for improvisation. Eventually 4 of the groups ended up competing at state. After large group, students began working on individual events. There are a variety of categories students can choose from, and each student can be in up to two events. Some of the events required students to memorize a script or piece of text, while others were able to read from various texts. Some students were responsible for writing their own material to perform. We had 18 students who participated in 33 different events. 17 of those events, performed by 13 students, qualified for the state competition. 2 Students were then selected to participate in the AllState Festival, in three different Events. Any high school student interested in joining Large Group and/or Individual Events Speech should contact Miss McDaniel and listen in the announcements for information about Speech Camp, which will take place in October.
